Our property & Our Story

Continuing a legacy

Black Fox Farms wasn’t always a wedding venue. It originally began as a dairy farm with the Varnell family who owned much of the land in the community. Mr. John Varnell transitioned the dairy farm to a nursery which led current owner, Joe Washington, to the farm in 1977. Soon after coming to work for Mr. Varnell, Joe purchased the farm which included a retail property as well, and eventually moved his family to the farmhouse on the property. Many years later, Joe renamed the nursery to Black Fox Farms honoring the community which is named for the Chief of the Cherokee Indians, Black Fox.

In 2005, Joe’s daughter, Sarah, wanted to marry Scott on the property. He took advantage of the opportunity to renovate the barn to create a space for the wedding. While she chose to marry in the front yard, the barn was used for their rehearsal dinner. Word spread about the barn and property. People began approaching the Washington’s about using the property for their weddings. It didn’t take long before the event calendar would be full year after year.

The Washington’s treat guests who book the venue as an extension of their own home and family. The staff goes above and beyond the expectation to accommodate the family to help create the most meaningful experience—because that is what you do for family.

Joe & Ellen had mothers who were friends. Legend has it that Ellen’s mother, pregnant with Ellen, went to visit newborn, Joe. When Ellen’s mother was introduced to Joe, Ellen flipped in her mother’s womb with excitement. It was love at first meeting. And the rest is history. In 2021, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Their love for each other, the community and the property shines through which makes weddings here feel special.
